Varanasi School turned into Garden: Inspiring story of Primary School Sihorwa

Swachh Bharat Mission, a vision of Prime Minister to see clean India. And his constituency Varanasi is fully adopting it. A Herbal Garden, Variety of plants, Smart classes and beautiful classrooms; this is how Government Primary School Sihorwa (Uttari) of Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh looks like.

A 5 star rating government school has developed a beautiful infrastructure and learning area for students. Head Master Mr. Rakesh Singh posted in Sihorwa in 2016 and then onwards he worked towards beautification of school.

When he went among the community of the village, he found that parents were not willing to send their kids in his school due to lack of basic facilities, poor classrooms and infrastructure. So he decided to change this outlook and transformed his school with the aim of modernizing it. He with support of all his teachers prepared a plan of action and in complete 5 years, they transformed the whole school into a beautiful learning atmosphere.

Mr. Rakesh with one of his assistant teacher, Mr. Dileep one day decided to prepare a garden in school keeping in mind the need of protecting environment for future. With the help of one villager Mr. Surendra they planned whole process of gardening in a cost effective manner. “There are more than 50 varieties of plants in our graden”, Mr. Rakesh told.

Similar to this but very unique initiative of ‘Herbal Gardening’ as well was taken by School. The products of this garden is also used in the kitchen of school. These garden give a cheerful environment to the school.

Apart from gardening, school also developed a good infrastructure and work of beautification inside the classes. School is imparted with CCTV cameras, regular electricity supply, fans in each class and proper hygienic environment. All the walls of classroom and outside boundary walls are well decorated with learning modules painted on it. Specialty of these walls are that, each wall is decorated by funds provided by villagers and their names are mentioned on it.

Efforts of school influenced Society as well towards its development. As a result, parents are coming to school during this lockdown as well to look after the school and it’s maintenance. Not only society but Government of India undertaking company ‘GAIL’ provided with a smart class facility to the school.

These efforts of Mr. Rakesh Singh and his whole team brought major changes in their school. Enrollment of school continuously rising from last 5 years. From around 160 students in 2016, it raised to near 300 this year. School has come under the 5 star category of UP schools based on learning outcome and cleanliness of school.

When assessment conducted by UP government to check the learning outcome of students, 54% students got A+ grade whereas 38% got A grade in Primary School Sihorwa.

Mr Rakesh proudly says – “Our Bal Sansad is very active and our students are attached to school.” Bal Sabha is developing leadership skills among students, He added.

One of the passed out student of school, Shravan was among the naughtiest and irregular one. When his parents requested him about making their child discipline, he decided to make him class monitor of class. He gave responsibility of whole class to him. It made him a disciplined and responsible student and also brought positive changes in academics, he told while remembering about achievements of their school.

Mr. Rakesh Singh’s work is encouraged by many. His school always received support as well as mentorship from inspiring Block Education Officer(BEO) Mr. Skand Gupta, who is relentlessly trying to make Arazilines block as a model block. Basic Education Minister of UP, Mr. Satish Dwivedi also praised his work and schools’ performance. Other than this, many prestigious guests visited the school several times.

Primary School Sihorwa (Uttari), is now among one of the best schools of Varanasi. Efforts and Teamwork of teaching staff of all 8 teachers, along with cooks, cleaners and gardeners of the school made it possible, Rajesh Singh told.
